Template-Based vs Custom-Built Websites

Template vs Custom Websites

Most web hosts out on the internet give you the ability to create a website using their proprietary template-based website building software. This can be a great tool for putting up a quick website in lieu of a fully-functional custom built one. But don’t fall into the trap of thinking your simple, easy-to-put-together temporary site is good enough for the long haul. There are a few drawbacks to making a template-based site the online representation of your company.

Potential look-alikes

When you use a simple website builder, you are only given a limited number of options as to how your website will look. We’ve actually encountered 2 websites that looked identical (save for the name of the company), and the kicker is that they were in the same industry, in the same city! Same stock photos and same template. You want your website to stand out and be recognizable as your own. When a potential client goes to your website, they need to know they are in the right place.

Ownership

As I mentioned earlier, website builders can provide you with a temporary residence for your business on the web. Another downside of using them as a long term solution is that the hosting company or service that provides the website builder owns it. Your website that you spent hours creating, is not your property. If you ever decide to change hosts or get out of paying a monthly service charge, you cannot take your website with you. It will have to be remade from scratch and more than likely would not look anything like the original. When you purchase a custom built website, you own it and can transfer it between hosts and never lose any functionality or features of your site.

Customization

If you currently have a website that is template based, you should know this all too well. Templates are just that. There is no room for making pictures bigger, adding text where necessary, or even adding multiple pages (some templates only allow 5 pages). Don’t settle on your website design. It’s a direct representation of your business and if it’s not exactly how you want it, then you shouldn’t have to settle for second best.
